Bait 'n' switch? It seems newsworthy, until you realise it's only Tom Holland, not the entire-freakin'-Netherlands.

This cropped up as a most read lead on BBC News online. What at first appeared to be a compelling national statement on social media abstinence, however, turns out to be a very much more mundane tale of a minor celebrity stepping away from InstaTweet. What a let-down! (thumbdown)

By the simple expedient of adding the thespian's first name—it's only three letters, after all, so that shouldn't have been too onerous!—it wouldn't have piqued my interest, or wasted my time. Bah, and damn you, Auntie Beeb! [shakes fist]


Anyone who thinks I'm being harsh in labelling Tom Holland a snowflake for abstaining from social media for mental health reasons, that wasn't the point. Mental health is important to wellbeing, and reducing one's exposure to social media is a positive step in maintaining it. But there's really no need to make a big Hey everyone, notice special me leaving! announcement. Just unplug.
