I think I've pissed myself

Dentist the menace

I last visited the dentist a little over a month ago. But nothing happened that'd be worth reporting in either Dental & Oral Case Reports or Journal of Dentistry & Oral Disorders. Unless the hygienist's recommendations for interdental brushes, because I don't floss regularly, counts.

Of course, this missive has some of the more amusing characteristics of predatory incompetence:

No matter. The reason that Joseph/Adrien hasn't received a response from me is the same as why he won't receive a response from me. My only value to him is money. And his only value to me is amusement. Neither of which require further correspondence. (pipe)

Earlier this year, Joseph/Adrien contacted me in some confusion: was it on behalf of Dental & Oral Case Reports or Journal of Dentistry & Oral Disorders? At least they've now got that bit sorted out, even if they still don't know who they are.

It seems that Adrien Parikh is now out of the picture, and I'm dealing directly with Joseph Irving. I'm not sure if this is an upgrade or downgrade in my standing with Journal of Dentistry & Oral Disorders. But, from the nature of the request, I think it might be for the better.

In light of my recent publications in the field of dentistry and oral disorders—none, by the way—Joe wants me to write a manuscript for his webcomic. This is an unusual request; the skeevies generally only ask you to submit an available or upcoming manuscript, but this sounds like a commission, and I'd have to charge for that. Therefore, I have to conclude that Joe's higher up the food-chain than Ade, and has the authority to enter into financial commitments like this.

Yeah, but no.

Back in the real world, I'd used Joe's tracking link to open the campaign mail template, rather than opening his message and activating the tracker. But I think it's worth playing this one along a little. (devil)

Dear Joseph Irving, Thank you for contacting me. I would be delighted to write a manuscript for your journal. Since you have requested me to write a manuscript, it would have to be done under commission. My charge for such work is a flat rate of €20,000 (twenty thousand euros). This includes: drafting a manuscript; all correspondence with the editorial team; and all revisions or rebuttals arising from the peer-review process. It does not include APC or DOI charges. If this is acceptable to you, we can proceed! Sincerely,

Joe didn't reply to my offer to write for Journal of Dentistry & Oral Disorders, but he has followed up with another solicitation. This time, he's just asking for a contribution of anything that's already to go.

I'm not sure if he no longer wants to pay for a manuscript to be written specifically for his eminent journal, or he simply can't wait that long. I can imagine that the world of dentistry and oral disorders doesn't stay still for very long; time is money relevance, and you have to keep ahead of the science curve.

Oh well.

I don't consider case reports to constitute research as such, since they're based on case observations, not an experimental or clinical study design. I don't expect Joe to share that view, or give any shits to be honest.

Although Journal have Impact Factor 2.1, which seems mighty impressive I have to admit,* limiting the call to dental case reports was, presumably, cutting things too fine. So Joe's opened up the running to oral case reports too.

Better luck this time, Joe!
