In an advertorial for Apple TV+'s The Tragedy of Macbeth, on behalf of BBC Culture, Hanna Flint explores the background behind Why Lady Macbeth is literature's most misunderstood villain. Meanwhile, for their part, the BBC's home page editor doesn't understand the question.
I couldn't tell you whether or not Flint succeeds in making her case. Or even substantiating the claim that Lady Macbeth is, indeed, literature's most misunderstood villain in the first place. To me, a treatise on any aspect of the Scottish play is about as welcome as food poisoning. I had to study it at school, and it imbued me with a lifelong loathing for anything Shakespearean.
