After overseeing the economic ruin of his country, Sri Lanka's former president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has fled to the Maldives. In a similar vein, his brother, the former finance minister, decided that a sojourn to the US was in order.
Rajapaksa has deputised his prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, as acting president in his absence. Given Sri Lankans' rage against the current regime; the state of the economy; and Wickremesinghe's own unpopularity, this can only be seen as a poisoned chalice. No wonder he's planning to resign.
It all makes BoJo's woes seem positively mundane. After all, nobody's invaded his official residence, or set fire to his house. They do things so much more colourfully in Sri Lanka.
