Eat your heart out

One of the criticisms that's been raised against the UK Chancellor's August Eat Out To Help Out initiative is that it extends to junk food outlets. And some people are riling against the signal that sends, and the implications for Britons' waist-enhancement.

Liberal Democrat MP Munira Wilson, the party's health spokeswoman, said with research suggesting obesity increases someone's risk of dying from coronavirus, the chancellor should have prevented people using the discount to buy junk food. [snip] The scheme has also drawn criticism from some anti-obesity campaigners, with the National Obesity Forum saying it would be a "green light to promote junk food".

Of course, it's all utter nonsense. Obesity may be a factor affecting susceptibility to COVID-19, but few people are likely to be pushed into that category simply by binging on junk food during the month of August. The short-term effect is more likely to be acute cardiovascular disease. Conversely, those who're already obese are hardly likely to drop into the safe zone weight-wise simply for junk food being excluded from the scheme.

Since the NHS has focussed on treating COVID-19 patients over those with heart attacks or cancer, having people die of heart attacks caused by a poor diet will not increase the pandemic-related mortality rate, which is all that the government seems to care about. In fact, the COVID-19 death rate might actually decrease if those who die from cardiovascular disease could otherwise have succumbed to the virus! This is nothing short of great news for Boris BoJo Johnson and his merry troupe of halfwits.
