Everyday thoughts, but not every day

Et Cetera

On the few occasions that Todd in the Shadows reviews the musical mitherings of Chicago, and Peter Cetera's voice in particular, he doesn't use glowing terms. I know how he feels.

I'm of the view that there's no point in covering a song, or remaking a film, unless you're doing something transformative with it. Otherwise, why bother? Just play the original. The Chimes' cover of U2's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For is a case in point, for how a creative reimagining can add something new of value. And Bono agrees.

And then it occurred to me, the exception that proves the rule: Bruce Foxton's cover of Chicago's 25 Or 6 To 4. It's certainly not transformative. But it's kick-arse, has the punchy horns, and it means that I can listen to a great version of a great song, without Peter Cetera's vocal whine. What's not to like? (thumbup)
