Batwahmxn: done fookin' scissorin'

Batwoman, one of the series set within The CW's Arrowverse, has been cancelled after three seasons. I only ever caught clips of it, usually when it was being roasted for its sheer bloody awfulness.

Showrunner Caroline Dries announced the news Friday on Twitter, writing, “Just got the sad news that Batwoman will not be seeing an S4. I am bummed, but full of gratitude. What an honor to make 51 episodes. So many inspiring, brilliant people contributed to this series. Thank you producers, cast and crew. Thank you, fans! We love you.”

A somewhat lacklustre attempt at poetry there, Caz. Just the sort of thing I'd expect at the close of an am-dram pantomime.

The love wasn't reciprocated though. Sure, there was a core audience of diehard fans, but it never even regained the fairly modest viewership that season 1 started out with. A season 3 average of less than 460,000 viewers, and a core 18–49 demo of 0.09, was hardly going to excite advertisers.

Batwoman: not an unmitigated success. The peak at s1e9 was the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover episode. Viewing figures from TV Series Finale.

With viewing figures like these, the only real surprise is why it wasn't pulled sooner. Presumably, the suits at The CW supported Dries' vow to never bury her gays, even in the face of go broke. But things are changing at Warner Bros, and the winds of reality are blowing through the corridors of power.

Perhaps the cancellation reflects the greater emphasis being put on profitability, as Warner Bros is subsumed into Discovery, whose CEO, David Zaslav, likes money. And there's another consideration: The CW is up for sale, but who'd want to buy it, with a ratings turd like Batwoman in active production?

When all's said and done though, the show's major, if not sole, cultural contribution was as a meme generator. And as the insipration for Meltdown (Ocean Man).
