The method of Sherlock

The body of a woman has been found in a suitcase in Mill Hill, north-west London. The Metropolitan Police have applied their best brains to the case, and are treating it as murder.

Sherlock Holmes said—or had it written for him, since he was actually a fictional character—It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

But there's something about bodies being found in suitcases that leads the police to rash assumptions of murder, without even attempting to exclude the impossible.
