The rise of Skynet

Prof. Bonkers and his colleagues at Cambridge's Centre for the Study of Existential Risk are to investigate whether technology could destroy human civilisation. He cautions against dismissing a potential rise of robots which, while not necessarily malevolent, may have interests that don't include those of humans.

Fears that machines may take over have been central to the plot of some of the most popular science fiction films. Perhaps most famous is Skynet, a rogue computer system depicted in the Terminator films. Skynet gained self-awareness and fought back after first being developed by the US military.

But how will the nutty professor account for any classified military developments? After all, the military have a habit of doing stuff without letting us know about it…at least not until it's too late, and the damned thing's turned into Skynet.

If nothing else, Beebnet has a sense of humour though.

Survival of the human race permitting, the centre will launch next year.
