Merkel is calling for EU countries to delay the opening of ski resorts until January. She has already received backing from France's Emmanuel Macron and Italy's Giuseppe Conte.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has already backed delaying the start of the ski season, but has stressed the need for a European solution. "If Italy decided to shut down all its ski lifts without any support from France, Austria and the other countries, then Italian tourists would risk going abroad and taking the contagion back home," he told La7 TV earlier this week.
I'm not exactly sure what Signor Conte means by Italian tourists would risk going abroad and taking the contagion back home
. I presume he's referring to tourists from Italy venturing abroad, contracting the virus, and then bringing it back with them.

Given that the infection rate in Italy is currently higher than the other European nations cited, he should be more concerned about exports than imports. (pipe)
