Everyday thoughts, but not every day

Thor Ragnarok

Thor battles to prevent Asgaard being destroyed by his long-lost sister, whom Odin cast into oblivion. Some reviewers railed against the humour, but I didn't think it was overdone.

Chris Hemsworth looks really comfortable as Thor now, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki was, well, Loki as before, just more of the same. Cate Blanchett was good value as the villainess, but I'm not sure why Jeff Goldblum's performance has been so lauded. It's a good character, and he plays him well, but he doesn't have that much screen time overall, and it's a pretty minor character in that respect—rather like Benicio del Torro's The Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy, possibly big in the comics but no more than a plot point in the film.

Tessa Thompson is undeniably cute, and enthusiastic as…a black Valkyrie! Really? I realise that Marvel only purloined characters from the Norse myths, and a black woman playing a Caucasian is no worse than a Caucasian playing an Asian—hello, Tilda Swinton—but I can't help but think that the real Norse were unaware of the existence of any skin colour other than that pale, flaccid look that you're likely to find on Blackpool beach. Either way, it kinda took me out of the experience.

Overall though, it's a decent enough entry into the MCU. 4/5.
