Everyday thoughts, but not every day

Clueless confirmation

It's always nice to have the value of your past work recognised by people whose sole interest is in your future money. As I've noted previously though, the only research that I've done on alcohol toxicity has involved a single subject individual. Me. (cocktail)(wine)(beer)

Journal of Substance Abuse and Alcoholism ISSN: 2373-9363 I hope you are having a great day! Our editorial board and expert reviewers gone through your previously published manuscript and they determined that the article “[completely irrelevant to the journals' scope of interest]” is worthy of scientific world. Based on their thoughts we requested to publish your upcoming research work with us on “Alcohol Toxicity” in our next issue. Please let us know if this sounds interested to collaboration with us. We’re excited to move forward with your submission. Please feel free to email me with any questions. Sincerely, Prits Kristine Managing Editor: Journal of Substance Abuse and Alcoholism JSciMed Central, USA

For an author claiming to be based in the US, I thought that the HTML language settings were interesting. I have no idea what mso-fareast-language does exactly, but I can't imagine that it's something that would be used routinely by anyone native to the US. I can imagine, however, that lang=EN-IN might be used by someone based in India, or whose computer settings are set as such, wanting to give the impression of being based in the US.

<span lang=EN-IN style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-fareast-language:EN-US'>

It should be noted that my article, deigned by JSAA's editorial board and expert reviewers to be worthy of scientific world, was published in a traditional journal following rigorous peer review, not in an open access comic following we'll-publish-anything-for-money peer review. Nevertheless, someone's put time and effort into this shit, even if it only shows that they have no fucking clue, so they deserve a response.

Dear Prits Kristine Thank you for confirming that my article entitled “[completely irrelevant to the journals' scope of interest]” is worthy of scientific world. That’s just what the peer reviewers thought four years ago when they approved its publication.

Medical Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Ricky returns, this time peddling Medical Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. How many journals of gynaecology can there be?

At least this time he broaches the subject, albeit not declaring the means, of unsubscribing from a shitlist that I never voluntarily subscribed to in the first place. Baby steps.

Journal of Human Nutrition & Food Science

Kyle—or is that Kuval?—hopes that I'm having a great day, and tries to ensure it by spamming me. How thoughtful.

Kyle/Kuval is Working as a Managing Editor!! for Journal of Human Nutrition & Food Science, another JSciMedCentral webcomic. Like Kristine Adams before him, one of his authors recommended a publication that, in his opinion at least, is well-written and contains good scientific information. I wonder if this was the same bastard who snitched on me to Krissie?

Clearly working from the same template as her, he's excited to work with [me] at the earliest possible., although the earliest possible what is anyone's guess. If, however, I do not intend to receive [my] emails, I can unsubscribe. How thoughtful.

I hope you are having a great day so far! I am Kyle Wilkins Working as a Managing Editor!! One of our authors recommended your previous work entitled "[snip]." being impactful. It was well-written and contained good scientific information. Moreover, your upcoming similar research work will definitely help to our journal growth and improve standards so, we request you to submit relevant unpublished manuscripts to our Journal Special Issue on "Dietary Exposure" You may mail your upcoming manuscript as an attachment to JHNFS@jscimedcentral.com I am excited to work with you at the earliest possible. Say it like it is, bitch!

Dear Kyle Wilkins, Thank you for your kind words. I am curious as to who of your authors recommended my work to you. I would also like to know why, if my work is “well-written and contained good scientific information”, you think I would want to publish anything in a grubby predatory webcomic? Sincerely,

I don't expect any answers.

JSM Sexual Medicine

Yet another scimedcentral webcomic, this time in the field of sexual medicine. I didn't realise that my reputation was that bad. (sad)

Kristine Adams is Working as a Managing Editor!! for JSM Sexual Medicine. I have no idea what JSM stands for, but it'd be funny if it was Journal of Sexual Medicine, because that would make the comic's full title: Journal of Sexual Medicine Sexual Medicine.

One of her authors apparently recommended a publication of mine from half a decade ago, and Krissie considers it to be well-written and containing good scientific information. Well, shit, I guess that's why it was accepted for publication in a reputable journal, not a money-grubbing webcomic. Still, it's reassuring to have her cack-handed endorsement, I'm truly flattered. (rolleyes)

Anyhow, she's excited to work with [me] at the earliest possible., which is nice to know. That makes one of us.

Journal of Pharmacology and Clinical Toxicology

Yet another JSciMed Central open access comic has approached me with an interest in my research on alcohol toxicity. My reputation goes before me! (cocktail) (proud)

I'm going to stick my neck out here, and assume that Ricky Martin is not the Ricky Martin. In fact, he's unlikely to be even a Ricky Martin. Rikhil Mahar would be more likely.

Anyway, unlike Prits Kristine, Ricky/Rikhil sees no reason to mix EN-IN with EN-US. Unlike the nurses and pharmacologists, which is always good for a wild time at hospital parties.

Two months have passed, and volume 10 issue 2 of Journal of Pharmacology and Clinical Toxicology, on the theme of alcohol toxicity, is still touting for business. Amusingly, Ricky's message is identical to his previous one, including the claim that: Journal of Pharmacology and Clinical Toxicology covers the most active and promising areas of current research in the field of Nursing! This guy's not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

It does include, however, the opt-out clause: If you don’t want to receive mails, Please Unsubscribe, with no indication as to how one does unsubscribe. There's no link to that effect. This guy's not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Wouldn't you know it? Just six weeks later, and volume 10 issue 2 is still touting for business. This time, however, Ricky's corrected the template to note that Journal of Pharmacology and Clinical Toxicology covers the most active and promising areas of current research in the field of Pharmacology. He seems ambivalent to the field of toxicology though. But the wee scamp's getting there, slowly.

I've no idea whether Smith Alison's JPCT is the same as Ricky Martin's, but it's no more relevant or of any interest. The time zone and email address are different. But that could mean everything or nothing at all, really. (shrug)

I don't recall receiving anything from her before now. Her—or Adam Smith's—email address doesn't appear in my scrapers' list, but that doesn't mean she hasn't tried before and I've overlooked it. I suspect, however, this is part of the standard pondlife bullshit.

I'm going to see if she honours her parting promise, though.

Have you had a chance to look over the previous email I sent you regarding the article submission? I know this season is busy for you, but I wish to know your interest as we are releasing the issue in January. If you’re interested, let me know when it works for you. If not, I won’t contact you again. Sincerely yours, Smith Alison WhatsApp: +1 (302) 207-0055 Journal of Pharmacology & Clinical Toxicology

While Carlos sounds Spanish, or Mexican, Bruckner has a distinct Germanic vibe to it. Either way, I can't help but picture my correspondent with a sizeable moustache.

Since he emailed me a while ago,* but hasn't heard from me yet,** he thought he'd check in.*** I dunno, but there's something about the combination of a barefaced lie and that presumption that really pisses me off. I guess the psychology of predatory publishing is that this is supposed to imbue the recipient with a sense of obligation. Or perhaps he really is just a shithead. Either way, it just pisses me off.

Of course, this is followed up with the standard complimentary bullshit. I'll ignore the rest and just play on that.

Dear Bruckner CL, I understand your wish to be associated with reputed and skilful authors such as myself, and as such I am pleased to accept your request. I charge $1,500 for a manuscript of my own creation. If you would like me to write a more specific manuscript to your own specification, that would cost $15,000. Please let me know your preference. Following Ricky Martin; Smith Alison; and Carlos Bruckner, comes Robert Striker with another request from JPCT for an article for their upcoming issue on the subject of the alcohol toxicity. A lesser mortal might feel they're being stalked by now.

Robert advises me that should I not wish to receive emails I should unsubscribe. But he offers no guidance as to how to go about that, or the likelihood of success—not high, I suspect. So I decided on a tactic of telling him to go fuck himself, without using the words go, fuck, or yourself.

Dear Robert Striker, I would ask you what relevance a publication entitled “[irrelevent to alcohol toxicity]” had to the subject of “the” alcohol toxicity. But I doubt that you could understand the question, let alone furnish an intelligible, and intelligent, answer. JPCT is just another money-grubbing predatory webcomic, sodomising the academic record for Indians’ profit.
