The drains have backed up again

Benign incompetence

Is there a word for it? It's a trait exhibited by many people, not least myself, whereby despite your best effort, you still manage to do something so badly that you never get asked to do it again. I don't mean deliberately screwing things up to avoid future repeat requests, just benignly and without malice.

My wife rarely asks me to do the laundry, after a couple of purely unintentional whoopsies. The problem, in this instance, is that I'm just not listening.

For her part, she has excused herself from ever having to build IKEA furniture. You know those integral fixed shelves, the ones that go in early on in the build, and hold the whole structure together? She's managed to put them in upside down, not once, but twice, so the metal fixings that are supposed to be hidden beneath are now proudly on display. I've thought about taking the damned things apart to rectify the problem, but my OCD's given in to my apathy, and we now just strategically place shit over the offending areas.

It might be the Dunning-Kruger effect, or a variation thereon.
