In what might be seen as a desperate attempt to garner public interest, and viewing figures, this year's Oscars nominations for best picture include some that were actually popular with cinema-going audiences.

Among the usual worthy-but-dull titles there are crowd-pleasers such as Top Gun: Maverick and Everything Everywhere All at Once. My wife and I saw the former at the picture playhouse and thought it was bloody marvellous, enough to order the disc release. I've also heard good things about the latter, and it has such an intriguing premise that it's on my must-watch list.

And then there's Women Talking, this year's Nomadland. I sense an upcoming bait 'n' switcheroonie.
