Less smart phones

BBC headline: Not smart but clever? The return of 'dumbphones'
The return of dumb something, alright.

As smartphones are taking over more of our lives, some droids are rebelling and breaking free. An increasing number of people are eschewing smartphones for old skool mobile phones, dubbed dumbphones. And bloody good for them, says I.

This is dumb as in not smart, not something that's designed for the speech disabled. Sara Nović would not approve of this micro-assault. Then again, I can't imagine that there's much call for dumbphones otherwise.*

Anyhow, I was thinking about the headline to Suzanne Bearne's article. Is it even possible for dumbphones to return, when that's not what they were when they largely disappeared? They were just (mobile) phones when they were superseded by smartphones. So, mobile phones have returned, as dumbphones.

* Yes, I realise that text-to-speech is a thing.
