This is my truth

Not much anonymity

A suspected racially-motivated attack in Germany, which is being treated as terrorism, has claimed at least nine victims. According to police, the suspect, a 43-year old German citizen identified only as Tobias R by local media, killed himself.

In their report—and presumably reported elsewhere—the BBC maintained the cloak of anonymity…by only publishing the perpetrator's photograph.

The Guardian and its Philip Oltermann don't share the BBC's caution towards Germany's privacy laws, or they know something that the BBC doesn't, for Tobias R. is named as Tobias Rathjen. Strangely enough, he claims to have come across this information from the assailant's identification in German media. (confused)

The gunman who killed nine people in the town of Hanau out of apparent hatred of minorities and turned his weapon on his own mother and then himself has been identified in German media as Tobias Rathjen, aged 43.
