Most of it's boring

Green sky thinking

Following COP26, now is the time for politicians to make bold pledges; irrespective of achievability. Because grand, but empty, gestures are just what the world needs. Forget the implementation and actual impact, we'll fix that in post. Or not. (rolleyes)

Denmark's prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, has said that she wants to make flying green. Accordingly, she's announced a goal for domestic flights to be fossil fuel-free by 2030.

The only problem is that the solutions to meet this target are not yet available, and may not be until 2035. But let's not allow a little technical detail to stand in the way of grand symbolic gestures. Besides, Frederiksen's really got the bit between her teeth now:

"When other countries in the world are too slow, then Denmark must take the lead and raise the bar even more," she said.

I wonder how much domestic air traffic there is in Denmark? It's easy enough to take the lead and raise the bar even more when you're a pissy, inconsequential little country the size of a handkerchief, with a domestic market to match.

It's just a pity that there are no technologies yet in place to harness political hot air. (pipe)
