All's not what it seems

Mohammad Dawood Muzammil: The man, the myth, the beard.

Things haven't gone too smoothly in Afghanistan, since the Taliban came to power in August 2021. And not just for the populace, who probably wish that all these arseholes were martyred, so they could just get on with their lives.

Prominent Taliban supporters have been dispatched to another place in a series of attacks, some claimed by Islamic State. And Mohammad Dawood Muzammil, governor of the northern province of Balkh, has now joined them as the most senior official to be killed in the last eighteen months. His death is thought to be the work of a suicide bomber. Oh well, anyway.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Twitter that the governor had been "martyred in an explosion by the enemies of Islam". An investigation is under way, he added.

It'll be amusing if Islamic State were behind it, and were therefore enemies of Islam. Because they're Islamic. There's a clue in the name, innit?

In the customary BBC News stealth update, Ng & Plett Usher now report that IS have claimed responsibility for martyring Muzammil. Therefore, by the Taliban's logic, Islamic State is an enemy of Islam. Just as long as we're all straight on that.
