Four plus one

A gunman wielding an assault-style rifle has stormed a skyscraper in the heart of New York, killing four people before shooting himself dead.

Thus opens Christal Hayes' and Rachel Hagan's account of bloodshed on the means streets of New York City. Or, rather, off the streets and inside one of its buildings. From this, we can clearly determine that a gunman killed four people, and then himself.
I lay no claim to being a mathematics whizz, or anything remotely like it, but from my albeit rudimentary understanding, four plus one equals five. It follows then that there are five bodies and therefore five dead: four murders and one suicide; four innocent victims and their killer.
It appears that consistency and the ability to do hard sums aren't held in high regard among staffers at the BBC's editorial desk.
In further news, the gunman double-parked his car before entering the building. So, in addition to murder, attempted murder, and associated charges we can add a Code 46 traffic violation, punishable with a fine of $115.
All in all, it's just as well he killed himself really.
