Snow White: D.O.A.
First weekend receipts are in, and Disney's Snow White has failed to achieve even the modest predictions of its box office performance, which have been adjusted down over the last few weeks. In fact, not even exceeding the low-end of the most pessimistic outlook, it debuted to a meagre $43M domestically and $87.3M globally.
Family-friendly films may be more resilient to box office decline—in comparison to superhero juggernauts, for example, which are typically front-ended—especially if their run occurs over a holiday period, and Snow White's is heading into Easter. So, it could leg-out
in the same manner as Mufasa: The Lion King, which did gangbusters over the Christmas and new year period. Or not, because The Lion King prequel, like the majority of Disney's live-action remakes, also performed well in overseas markets.

Deadline's international box office editor and senior contributor, Nancy Tartaglione, tries to explain why Snow White underperformed against expectations outside the US:
The $50M+ hoped for overseas ahead of the launch didn’t materialize in part because audiences didn’t feel a sense of urgency (note that it’s unlikely any of the so-called controversy surrounding the film played a role).
Nancy Tartaglione, ‘Snow White’ Bashful With $87.3M Global Bow; ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Crosses $400M WW – International Box Office, Deadline
So, there you have it, according to a professional international box office editor: it’s unlikely any of the so-called controversy surrounding the film played a role
. But there are so many and varied controversies, aren't there? Can they all be dismissed so readily?
And therein lies the rub. The live-action
remakes have pulled in at least 50% more from overseas markets than from the domestic box office. The outlier to this being The Little Mermaid, which came in with 9% less. I have no idea what the full explanation is for this difference, but at least one given at the time was that Asian audiences in particular did not buy into Disney's woke
agenda; they did not appreciate a race-swapped traditionally white character, nor the other major liberties taken with the story to turn it into a girl boss empowerment feature.
So, perhaps Nancy's a little naive to think that the controversies surrounding this release don't play a role overseas. For sure, international audiences are less likely to be fazed by Rachel Zegler's anti-Trump views on social media. They might not even care that she told half of the USA that she hoped they know no peace and didn't need their business. And who even knows what they think about the Zegler/Gadot feud over the Gaza War? But they may well be more sensitive to the controversies around rewriting the classic fairy tale. Who knows? Time will tell, I guess.
She does her best to remain bullish on behalf of the House of Mouse though, citing Captain America: Brave New World's global tally limping over the $400M mark as it winds down its five-weeks theatrical run: Dis has the top two releases of the year so far
; the year so far being less than three months. What she diplomatically overlooks is that while these two titles may have grossed more than any others so far this year, they also cost vastly more to get to screens. The latest MCU outing is a bomb in real terms, and Zegler's Folly
looks set to follow in its footsteps. Quel dommage!
As for me, I can't resist the urge…
[ dances the DIE DISMAL DISNEY dance ]
When Walt Disney first conceived the idea of a feature-length animation, many thought the project was doomed to fail. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs became known as Disney's Folly
. It went on to enormous success, paving the way for the company's financial renaissance. Ninety years on, it's possible that Zegler's Folly
will have the opposite effect.
Of course, to truly blame the whole travesty on Zegler would be unfair; she's simply the opinionated mouthpiece to the disaster. Really, the blame lies with executive management for letting it get so out of hand.
Bloody hell! The final opening weekend numbers have been released and the box office take readjusted, downwards, to $42.2M domestic, $86.1M global. This means that the US domestic box office underperformed even the most pessimistic late projections.
I'm getting blisters on my feet…
It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong, and I'm not afraid to do just that. Snow White's take at the US domestic box plummeted 66% during its second weekend. Not only that, but it was actually dislodged from the top spot by a generic action flick, A Working Man.
The working man beats the woking woman

The international haul fell a more modest 48%, for a global total of $143.1 million. At the same time, it's been revealed that the production spend was $213.9M, just to the end of 2023. Subsequent additional production costs, plus marketing and distribution, will have brought the overall spend to around $350M–$400M, meaning that this turd will have to bring in around $700M+ at the box office just to break even.
I'm no expert, but I reckon it'll be lucky to scrape by with much more than $200M from its theatrical run. So that'll be a loss of around $300M to the Mouse House.
My feet are really beginning to hurt now…
At the risk of dancing on the grave, after six weekends on general release Snow White has finally limped over the $200M mark. Just.
According to Box Office Mojo, its worldwide haul now stands at $200,211,787. Of this, $85,766,923 comes from domestic theatres and $114,444,864 from overseas, giving an international:domestic ratio of 1.33. While this ostensibly implies that the film was more popular with international audiences, I think it's more realistic to say that it was less unpopular, suggesting a lesser negative impact from Zegler's and Gadot's Gaza/anti-Trump politicking than in the USA.
The international haul is still only 42% of that taken by The Little Mermaid though, so it's hardly the warmest reception in comparison. How much of this was due to the leads' political stances, bastardisation of the original story and characters, the production as a whole being terrible, or general apathy towards live-action remakes is anyone's guess.
Although the upcoming Lilo and Stitch might give some pointers towards the latter.
By Friday 2nd May, Zegler's Folly was being shown in only 310 US theatres and pulled in $217k over the weekend, at an average take of $700 per theatre, dropping to a midweek daily average as low as $33. Is it even economically viable for a cinema to show it at that point?
But someone at Burbank had a massive brainfart: I know! Let's release it to more theatres for the Mother's Day weekend.
Great idea, trebles all 'round. Hic!
So, an additional 1020 theatres were duly roped in, for the weekend box office to jump to $467k…at an average of $350 per theatre, and down to a daily $22 midweek.
The following weekend, last weekend, the number of showings nationwide dropped to 180. But at least the average weekend haul increased, to $590. So that's something!
At this point, as the receipts dwindle to a trickle, it almost seems as if sheer bloody-mindedness is the only thing keeping it from being taken off screens altogether. Still, as the current global tally stands at $205M, my prediction of $200M was pretty much bang on. Yay me!
