Big Bird in space
14 November 2023

Not wishing to trivialise a tragedy, but this is a tempting thought nonetheless: What if Big Bird Exploded in the Challenger Disaster? It's a question posed as a delayed April Fool's joke by AlternateHistoryHub.

The power of five
3 September 2023

A series of articles on the BBC's home page extolling the power of the number five caught my eye, leading me to this story about British pupils still using the pandemic to avoid school in favour of esports training.

A woman's work is never done
28 June 2023

An Italian teacher was sacked after not attending her school for twenty years of her twenty-four year career. Her absenteeism was brought to light only when she returned to work briefly, and her students complained how terrible she was at her job. She should've stayed absent, since it was working so well for all parties.

China crisis
11 June 2023

As the UK pursues a more egalitarian education system, pretty much anyone can go on to further education; even if it is only to study breakfast cereal box design at the University of HoleInTheGround—previously the Polytechnic of HoleInTheGround, before polytechnics levelled-up to universities—or, worse, media and inclusivity at Bournemouth University. After years of study activism, they graduate fully qualified to flip burgers, deal drugs, or turn tricks.

Bible bashing
3 June 2023

After the pornography of Michaelangelo's David, comes the vulgarity and violence of the King James Bible. I shit you not. A parent in Utah complained of its depravity, and the school district has removed it from elementary and middle schools.

A BBC story of cyber bullying on Chinese social media is most notable for bringing the existence of East China Normal University to my attention. I wonder what courses are taught at East China Abnormal University? (thinking)

Following a sixth-grade art lesson at Tallahassee Classical School, FL, a parent complained that the students had been exposed to pornography when shown Michelangelo's statue of David. As a result, the school's principal was forced to resign or be fired.

BBC Bitesize is supposedly a learning portal. Which makes it even more egregious when the droid gets it wrong. Even equivocally.

Traumedy
6 January 2022

Laughter is the best medicine, or so we're told. And a prescribed comedy course could be a new way to help people recover from trauma. The sessions will be free for participants, although presumably not for the UK taxpayer; they get their joy from their tax bill.

BBC Bitesize is a series of purportedly educational learning materials and quizzes for children. Or is it? Educational, that is.

Hair razor
22 October 2021

Boys attending school in the Magnolia Independent School District, Texas, are banned from having long hair. Now, seven students are suing the school district for gender discrimination. Okay, seems fair, gender discrimination is wrong, either way it's applied.

Too much too young
19 August 2021

While the Catholic League mither over a Muppet Babies episode fostering transitioning among preschoolers, the Scottish government is going all-in once they get to school. It has published guidance for schools on supporting transgender young people; with young people defined as children or young people who are of school age.

At one with nature
31 May 2021

Children in Blackpool don't have enough access to nature, at least according to teachers at Westminster Primary Academy. They have cited a nine-year-old who had never seen the sea, despite living in a seaside town, and a ten-year-old who didn't know what a duck was.

The new Thinkpol in training
5 May 2021

Sarah Hewitt-Clarkson, head teacher at Anderton Park primary school, is instilling her pupils with a nice little Orwellian ethic. Children have been taught to call out sexist language and even to identify sexist stereotypes in books and worksheets. And the programming training starts at the age of three years in the nursery school.

The Price is right
23 March 2021

Alexander Price, a teacher at Denbigh High School in north Wales, has been struck off the teachers' register for two years, for inappropriate, offensive, or derogatory blog posts, in which he mocked the school's pupils and teaching staff. Among other thoughts, he described the girls attending school prom as dressing like Eastern European prostitutes and Kardashian clones; having poorly applied fake tans, because they were too illiterate to read the instructions; and as overweight girls being shoehorned into gowns and paraded through the town like cattle.

Excitable BBC 'journalist' in overstating the case shock!

School's out
20 August 2020

As a result of the pandemic, school exams in the UK have been cancelled and, for those all-important ones that influence students' future career paths, the results have been replaced with predictions. But, not all predictions are equal. Many students were angry and distressed when their results were first announced, and they hadn't done as well as they had expected. Funnily enough, this is not a new thing. But what is new is that the results were predicted centrally, using a statistical algorithm. I cheerfully admit to knowing bugger all about the algorithm, other than it gives substantial weight to schools' past performance as well as other factors.

Missing the point?
16 July 2020

The sending of a black teenager to juvenile detention for not doing her online schoolwork has led to the inevitable protests and calls for her release in Detroit, Michigan. One mother, Sheri Crawley, told local TV news I know if Grace was a 15-year-old white girl she would not be sitting in juvenile detention right now.

12 March 2019

In the good old days, all you needed to go to university in the USofA was to be intelligent or good at sports. I never understood why they'd give places to students just because they were academically-inclined at the potential expense of a football jock, but there you go. (rolleyes)
