Some naughty individual(s) spread a hoax on X that Gmail was to be shuttered in August. Google rushed to publicly confirm that, unfortunately for those of us deluged with Gmail spam, this was not the case and its users can continue to spew shit into our inboxes.

DIE, Google, DEI

Melonie Parker is Google's chief diversity officer, in charge of sociopolitical checkbox-based hiring. She joined Omose Ighodaro in the BBC's Executive Lounge, boasting Google's DEI credits in How Google is sticking to – and soaring past – its DEI goals. Although soaring past suggests that their goals may not have been too much of a stretch in the first place.

I imagine it's fair to say that anyone who watches YouTube content has a penchant for certain subjects and content creators. I guess the algorithm learns that and brings in new but more of the same over time. Perhaps the settings are stored on one's computer, dunno. Whatever, it seems that the algorithm really shits the bed on occasion, and loses track of my favoured viewing; possibly in an attempt to drive me towards creating an account.

Critical security alert: do nothing!

I received a critical security alert from Google today, advising me that someone had my account password, and requesting that I sign in to change it. The damnedest thing is it was sent to an email address that I have no recollection creating a Google account with. I did create an account to comment on a YouTube video a couple of years ago, but I can't recall what email address I used; and, besides, I deleted the account.

Breaking Bard

Google managed to wipe more than 7% off its stock value when its new AI platform, Bard, didn't perform as well as might've been expected in a recent demonstration. Asked what it could tell a nine-year-old about the James Webb Space Telescope's discoveries, it responded with it being the first to take pictures of a planet outside the earth's solar system.
