The ramblings of a pseudointellectal…or a genuine idiot?

Journal of Anything

There's not much to this missive from Laura Wilson. As expected, her mail server is not in the same timezone as Chicago. Hey-ho. I have no experience or past publications of any possible relevance to the journal. In fact, the message below is not what I received, it's the MailWizz template that her tracking image links to, so everyone on her shitlist gets the same. Par for the course.

So, I was about to consign this one to electronic damnation, when I noticed a vast amount of whitespace in the message, and line returns in the source code. Hmmmm…

[scrolling…scrolling…scrolling]

And at the bottom, I found three journal titles. Presumably these are Laura's portfolio: this one, Clinical Journal of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics; Journal of Pediatrics and Neonatology; and…Journal of Greenland.

Journal of Greenland? W.T.F? (confused)

And that might explain why most solicitations that I receive are for journals that are way out of scope. Bone-headed editorial managers spewing form templates to an uncurated, scraped distribution list. And they expect proficient scientists to waste their time—and funding—on this crap. (SMH)

Journal of Greenland doesn't appear to exist. Yet. No doubt it's in the planning, and in view of my expertise and past publications, I'll be requested to contribute articles in the future.

Although Laura Wilson and I have had fun sparring with each other over Journal of Reproductive Medicine and Family Planning, I haven't heard from her esteemed Clinical Journal of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics for almost a year! But now it's here, and it's a sight to behold. For it encompasses many of the tropes associated with the predatory solicitation:

  • uncalled for, it's spam after all;
  • terrible English;
  • opening with wishes/greetings for/of the day!;
  • vague and broad acceptance criteria;
  • valuable manuscript;
  • closing with always there to support us;
  • also accepting anything from anyone you associate with, they're desperate after all.

One trope that's often used is the imminent deadline to add urgency. This example is almost the complete opposite: a deadline of 30.06.2023 for an issue to be released in January, four months ago! (LOL)

Dear Laura Wilson, I’m afraid I’ve missed “the upcoming issue ready to be released in the month of January” as per your kind notice. I do hope it was a huge success nonetheless! Sincerely,

Journal of Reproductive Medicine and Family Planning

Laura's back although, disappointedly enough, not pimping Journal of Greenland; I'm still awaiting that call to arms. No, this time it's on behalf of Journal of Reproductive Medicine and Family Planning journal. Admittedly, my only proficiency in the relevant themes is the planned parenthood of two daughters—their being brought into this world, that is, not their gender per se—but I'm sure that'll be enough.

I am currently working on a manuscript with the provisional title of “Sole male in a family with wife and two teenage daughters: Going to work to practice talking”. I wonder if this would be a suitable candidate for the family planning theme? Please advise. Sincerely,

It comes as absolutely no surprise that my joke title fits within the scope of the journal, where scope refers to its revenue generating potential, not academic field of enquiry; either that, or she as a wikkid sense of humour. Nor is it any surprise that Laura's reply comes outside of Illinoisan working hours.

I only wonder whether my valuable submission would pass the [cough] rigorous peer review.

Of course, her missive is a template shat out to a shitlist. In fact, it's the same template that she used only a month ago. Probably the same shitlist too.

I'm not lying when I say that her messages would have been actioned: ridiculed here and then deleted. So, no, there's no failure of communication, except the one between her left ear and her right ear.

Dear respected Laura Wilson, I am so sorry to learn that you have tried several times to contact me without response from me. I cannot understand this oversight. Rest assured, if I had received anything, I would not have left it unactioned. When did you send these previous messages? It is possible that they were lost in transit; we have been having some IT problems lately. If you can send receipts for the past failed messages, I can assure you that I will action this with our IT department. Yours sincerely,

It's been all of four days, so clearly it's time for Laura to take another dump in my junk mail folder. Same template as twice before, although the subject does change: firstly Your research deserves a global audience; then Join our prestigious community of authors; and now Calling all esteemed researchers. And I've only just noticed that while I've been a doctor in the email body, I'm elevated to professorship in the subject header. Fancy!

I had thought of a couple of titles to submit: Nailing cocks to walls: family planning among the criminal classes, and Is parental gender reassignment a new possibility for family planning? But I decided on something closer to home: Free availability of condoms reduces pregnancy and disease among Indian prostitutes. I'm certain that's something she can empathise with.

It's still not Journal of Greenland though. I feel my proficiency in the theme should be recognised. And there'd be no call for soddin' case reports.

Gynecology(?)

I think Laura Wilson's now pimping a new webcomic, Gynecology [sic], and not cranking the handle on Journal of Reproductive Medicine and Family Planning, but it could go either way. Anyhow, I have no idea what she means by my proficiency in the relevant themes, unless she's read my numerous posts on this blog regarding OB/GYN. Either that, or she's monitoring my web usage…(embarrassed)

I should be relieved she's only trying to scam me for APC and not BTC I guess.
