BBC headline: UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with scanners
BBC headline

London City Airport has become the second in the UK, after Teesside International Airport, to scrap the 100mL limit for carry-on liquids, following the introduction of new scanners. This momentous event is expected to improve the security experience for many tens of travellers.

Of more interest—to those of us who truly value pedantry—is the BBC's choice of headline, which appears to make more of the announcement than warranted: LCA is neither one of the UK's most significant airports, nor the first to make the changeover. So Jemma Dempsey and Katy Austin's decision to mark the event seems somewhat arbitrary.

Presumably it's a slow news day.

According to Civil Aviation Authority statistics for 2022 (CSV, PDF): of almost fifty UK airports, TIA came in at #28 with 173k terminal passengers, and LCA at #15 with 3M. On the other hand, 61.6M and 32.8M passed through London Heathrow (#1) and London Gatwick (#2) respectively, while the top five airports together saw 154M passengers, representing 70% of all traffic. There's a way to go yet.
