What's that smell?

My outstanding H-index

Susan Lee is impressed with my outstanding H-index. (proud)

She's also overwhelmed that my work is being applauded. I have to admit that I hadn't noticed, but that's by the by.

One thing that I did notice is that, while she's soliciting on behalf of Journal of Sports Medicine and Therapy, she's sending from Journal of Child, Adult Vaccines and Immunology. I guess it doesn't really matter, it's all medicine. At least she's feasible though, so that's something. (shrug)

But what on earth's an H-index? (confused)

Greetings to of the day. We are overwhelmed to see that your work’s being applauded by many, and we have noticed that your H-index is outstanding, and hence, we are here to humbly request you of contribution towards our Journal: Journal of Sports Medicine and Therapy (ISSN: 2573-1726). We are a pioneering Open Access Journal with an aim to heighten science along with that we feel the scope of the journal falls in your expertise. We are Equitable, Fair, and Feasible. We have increasing Internal Impact factor, Eigen factors, Immediacy Index, Cited Half-Life, and Article Influence Factor, Respectively… We take pride in being reasonable and would love to have a conversation with you, if you have a manuscript to publish with us. We await to hear from you. Sincerely and thanks, Susan Lee If these emails get annoying, please feel free to unsubscribe.

Although she only wants a conversation if I have a manuscript to be published, it would be rude and remiss of me not to acknowledge her kind compliments.

Dear Susan Lee, Thank you for your complimentary observations on my h-index. It’s very nice, isn’t it? Your admiration is very gratifying, and makes all my efforts worthwhile. Yours, in the love of heightened science,

It appears that my reply didn't fall into a black hole. Susan Lee passed it on to Sansa Emily. Or did Lee Susan pass it on to Emily Sansa? (confused)

And now she wants me to do her a favour, which is putting the cart before the horse. It's the hoes that are supposed to perform the favours.

Anyhow, Emily is soliciting receipt of her mail. I don't know why, it includes a tracking image tag, which is unique to the one that Susan used. But I opened the message in source mode, just to confuse her. Tee hee.

My confusion tactics were successful, and now Emily's worried that she hasn't heard from me. I'm such a bastard! (devil)

She's so worried that, although her message is addressed to me, she's included nine other recipients who appear to be affiliated with external academic institutions and the like. I have no idea who any of these people are, I can only assume that they're the suckers who've been conned into joining the comic's editorial board. More fool them.

And she's also offered the opportunity for an end-to-end encrypted phone conversation. Why on earth would I need that? I'm not an arms dealer.

This message evaded my junk mail folder, because the From header has been changed to the Reply-To header in her last message. Once again, I opened this message in view source mode, so as not to activate the tracker. (thumbup)

I didn't note the previous tracking token, so I can't compare it with the one used this time. But the subdomain at least has changed. So there is some degree of uniqueness here, compared to her earlier message.

<img src="http://url1618.heighpubs.us/wf/open?upn=[snip]" alt="" width="1" height="1" border="0" style="height:1px !important;width:1px !important;border-width:0 !important;margin-top:0 !important;margin-bottom:0 !important;margin-right:0 !important;margin-left:0 !important;padding-top:0 !important;padding-bottom:0 !important;padding-right:0 !important;padding-left:0 !important;"/>

I'd forgotten all about Sansa Emily. It's been a while since we corresponded.

She believes that I need help publishing my work in a reputable journal. She then goes on to spoil the illusion, by suggesting that her comic could fulfil that requirement.

But I wonder what the significant rewards are?

At least she got her wish fulfilled: a response within 24 hours.

Dear Sansa Emily, Thank you for your offer of assistance, it is much appreciated. I am curious as to the “significant rewards” that you mention. What rewards would these be? How much do you pay authors for their contributions to your esteemed journal? Sincerely,

Sansa didn't reply to my last message, but instead to her earlier one that I'd replied to. Strange. Ne'ermind, we're getting somewhere at last, although I'm not exactly sure where that somewhere is.

Regarding significant rewards, I had asked how much JSMT pays authors, knowing full-well that the flow of drinking tokens is expected to go in the opposite direction. No journal pays for articles, especially a predatory one. Rather than answering that question directly, however, she now advises that it's a reputable magazine that pays well.

So JSMT isn't a journal now, it's a magazine. Which is closer to a comic, really.

This time, she's gonna be disappointed.

Cookie-cutter thanks

If JSMT is paying anyone, it's certainly not enough to contact reviewers and editors to thank them directly. Instead copy/paste some no-shits-given boilerplate text, and stick it on the website. Job's a good'un! (thumbup)

Thanks To Reviewers We would like to thank Reviewers for taking the necessary time and effort to review the manuscript. We sincerely appreciate all your valuable comments and suggestions, which helped us in improving the quality of the manuscript. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the effort and expertise that you contributed towards reviewing the article, without which it would be impossible to maintain the high standards of peer-reviewed journals.

Now Sansa's replied to my query from two weeks' ago and, as I expected, all is as I expected. Despite JSMT being a reputable magazine that pays well and offering significant rewards, and even taking my outstanding H-index into consideration, the flow of drinking tokens isn't in my favour.

Perhaps things are getting escalated, because Susie's been brought back in the loop. But I think I'm done here.

Thanks for your reply. We couldn’t pay anything now for your activities. If we are in that position, definitely we will provide you with an honorarium. As it is an Open Access Platform, we need contributions from the author. Finally we can provide a waiver on the cost and you can pay at least service charges. Hope you will give us a chance to serve your manuscript. Looking forward to your support of this journal. Once again bypassing the question of rewards and payment, Sansa returns hoping that she's resolved a query that I never raised in the first place. She wants to hear from me within 24 hours.

But, as Sir Michael Mick Jagger once opined, you can't always get what you want. And, not only will Sansa not receive a reply, she won't even receive a mail-read notification. Tee hee!

This is the same shtick that she sent to me three weeks' ago. But I'm bored with Sansa Emily now, so it's time to put this little charade to bed. I doubt that she'll take the hint, though.

That's high-pressure sales for you.

Dear Sansa Emily, I have had no query about your journal’s indexing. It was your colleague, Susan Lee, who kindly complimented me on my outstanding H-index. You have previously, however, advised me that JSMT is a “a reputable magazine that pays well”, only to later backpedal and tell me that you cannot pay me anything. I feel that you misled me, and this represents a breach of trust between us. I will therefore seek alternative outlets for my work, and to grow my reputation. Sincerely,

I was right about her not taking the hint. This is the same message that she sent on 17.08, so not only is she obtuse, but she's also not one for creativity. Or, looking at it another way and putting a more positive spin on it, she's efficient.

Still, no more correspondence will be entered into. I'll just leave her wistfully reflecting on what could've been a beautiful publishing relationship. (devil)
