This is my truth

The unknown incel

An incel who murdered ten people in Toronto in 2018, by driving a van into pedestrians, has been sentenced to life in prison, with no possibility of parole for 25 years. He was found guilty of the crimes last year.

Throughout the ruling last year, Justice Malloy refused to name the attacker, referring to him instead as John Doe, and said she would not give him the notoriety "he sought from the start".

The droid also did not name the perpetrator in the article, referring to him only as the killer or (van) attacker. So, this wouldn't be Alek Minassian, who had been named in previous BBC News reports, would it? (confused)

In fact, while reporting the guilty verdict last year, the droid mentioned his name in the headline, while noting:

Throughout the ruling, Justice Malloy refused to name the attacker, 28, referring to him instead as John Doe, and said she would not give him the notoriety "he sought from the start".

Well, okay then!

other BBC stories named the perpetrator
Although the BBC did not name the perpetrator in this report, they had done so previously. Two of those previous reports are conveniently linked at the end.

Yes, I am aware that there's a difference between a judge not naming a perpetrator and a court injunction preventing the press from naming them. I just thought it amusing that the BBC used this opportunity to not name him, when they had fully identified him previously, while at the same time acknowledging Justice Malloy's empty gesture.
