What's that smell?

Grand research

Researchers at Birmingham and Surrey Universities have discovered a security flaw in the combination of Apple Pay and Visa, which could allow thieves to remotely access a Visa account through an unlocked iPhone. Neither Samsung Pay nor Mastercard were susceptible.

For their parts, both Apple and Visa have stuck their heads up their arses. Apple blamed Visa's systems, and Visa said that the attack was impractical in the real world. So, that's alright then.

The researchers demonstrated the flaw by making a contactless Visa payment of £1,000 from one of their own accounts, using a locked iPhone. What isn't clear is how British academics gained access to such vast sums of money, even as credit to pretend with.
