Crunchyroll announced its expansion from anime distributer to original content creator, with High Guardian Spice, in 2018. Three years later, and the product is almost ready to rollout to an expectant world. Or the part of it that's into anime, anyway.
The official trailer was released on 6 August, and has not been an unmitigated success. While Crunchyroll Collection's YouTube channel has 3.41M subscribers, the trailer has currently received only 108,435 views. Of its 19,290 votes, 89% are dislikes, although it's open to question as to how many of those are from drive-by trolls, as opposed to actual Crunchyroll subscribers. Comments and reviews have been, by and large, dismissive at best and derisive at worst.
One of the criticisms levelled against High Guardian Spice on social media is the lack of diversity among its creators. For example, the writing team is proudly 100% female…and, it appears, white. At least, if there are any non-whites involved, they were conspicuous by their absence in 2019's promotional video. But, as long as the product delights the audience with exceptional story-telling; character design; animation; and production values, then it should speak for itself.
Besides, the cartoon's lead lesbians characters all have different coloured hair. How much more diverse can they get? (rolleyes)
Disclaimer: I'm not into anime, so I don't have any skin in this particular game. But umpteen reviews led my curiosity to get the better of me. And the best quote award goes to Anime America, who observed that the opening theme song gave her Care Bears vibes. Eeef!
