All's not what it seems

Hot off the press: a brand new publishing house

Journal of Women [sic] Health Care and Gynaecology is a newly-established web comic that aims to fleece researchers in the fields of women's health care and gynaecology. And, after finding my article entitled «title» to be quite interesting, Victoria Young thinks that I can aid this fledgling effort.

By joining the comic's editorial board, I will be able to carry out the work that reputable publishing houses have done by paid editorial staff. It saves them money, and gives me something to keep me busy and off the streets: win-win!

Given the garbled English, borderline unintelligible in places, you might not be surprised to learn that, while Victoria—or the template designer—set the language to US English, this little snippet sneaked in: <body lang="EN-IN" [snip]>. I suspect that Victoria may not be all who she claims to be.

I don't recall coming across BioRes Scientia before. The company's apparently based in Dallas, TX. Curiously enough, however, a Biores Scientia Pvt. Ltd was registered only last week in Hyderabad—on 06.07.2022, to be precise—with registration number U22120TG2022PTC164499. Coincidence?

You can draw your own conclusions from the company's mission statement.

BioRes Scientia, About

Not quite a year has passed, and Victoria Young is passing 'round the begging bowl for the upcoming dumpage of Journal of Women [sic] Health Care and Gynecology, beckoning me to Embrace the Author's Journey. I've heard of the hero's journey, a reference to a character arc in a story, but the author's journey is a new one on me. I suspect that this particular journey ends not with the heroine's embrace, but with an invoice for the APC fee.

Once again, the mail headers proclaim the language to be en-US, while the text is littered with <span lang="EN-IN">. A boy could be forgiven for thinking she might not be in Dallas, TX after all. (rolleyes)

The subtlety of my response may be lost on her. We shall see.

Dear Victoria Young, Thank you for appreciating my professionalism and knowledge. I only wish I could reciprocate. Sincerely,

Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology Research

BioRes Scientia is branching out, from women's health care and gynaecology to OB/GYN. Okay, I guess, but I don't know what that has to do with me. (shrug)

I realise that my reply is hardly original, and hopefully she won't confer with her stablemate Victoria, but I'm feeling neither particularly creative nor vexed. Still, at least it's acknowledgement of her mail within 24 hours.

Dear Catherine Kato, Thank you for appreciating my professionalism and knowledge. I only wish I could reciprocate. Sincerely,

Catherine Kato is impressed with one of my publications. She doesn't specify which one it is that's been singled out for special recognition. But the unwritten implication is that the remainder are beneath her. Bloody cheek! I realise that they can't all be gems, but all the same…(grumpy)
