No (bad) sex please, we're British
Jonathan Littell has won the Bad Sex in Fiction prize for 2009, for his novel The Kindly Ones. This work of literary genius contains such rather pedestrian flights of sexual prose as This sex was watching at me, spying on me, like a Gorgon's head
, and a jolt that emptied my head like a spoon scraping the inside of a soft-boiled egg
.
My sympathies go to Mr Littell's spouse or significant other if this is what sex conjures up for him.
The novel was originally published in French, which may explain a lot.
