Spam, no matter what...

Just a brief note on two issues that have cropped up before, at least independently, but here they come together in an inglorious double whammy.

Firstly, stating that an unsolicited commercial message is not spam doesn't mean that it's not spam, it just makes the sender seem ignorant or dishonest. I'm not sure what's worse. Sending an unsolicited message to a recipient based on their eminence in the field—I have none, by the way—does not change this fact: it's still unsolicited, I did not opt-in; it's still commercial; and it's still email. Ergo, it's UCE…i.e. spam.

Secondly, I am not receiving this message because of my relationship with the sender. I have no relationship with the sender, other than that of spammer and spammed. I'm receiving this message because the sender has either created or bought a list of email addresses that have been scraped online.

Any attempt by the sender to make themselves appear reputable is shallow and deceptive. Then again, this is the infamous OMICS Publishing Group that we're talking about here. So skeevy and disreputable are par for the course.
