What's that smell?

Batty

The pekapeka, or long-tailed bat (Chalinolobus tuberculatus (North Island)), has won the title of New Zealand's bird of the year. The victory has upset some people, who unironically took to Twitter—hohoho!—to complain. Nevertheless, the organisers of the poll, Forest & Bird, remain unrepentant.

This tokenised representation is just typical of the way things are going. If there's a real need to recognise bats, or mammals in general, a creative environmental group would organise a suitable poll accordingly.

And I'm pretty sure that there'd be hell to pay if a bird even tried to enter, let alone won. Tsk!
