Bitches bitch'n'

Come back when you're dead

BBC headline: “Uttar Pradesh: Why it took 42 years to convict a 90-year-old in India”
BBC News headline.

On reading the headline, it took me a brief moment to recognise that the 90-year-old in question must be that age now, not at the time the crime was committed. Otherwise, he'd be in the news for entirely more worthy reasons.

After forty-two years, he's the only surviving perpetrator of the murder of ten dalit residents of Sadhupur village. Many witnesses have also died in the interim. The arm of Indian law may be long, but it's not swift. Nevertheless, Ganga Dayal is finally going down, banged up in ol' pokey for life.

Last Wednesday, Judge Harvir Singh of the district court in the town of Firozabad sentenced the only surviving accused Ganga Dayal, a member of the Yadav caste, to life imprisonment. Dayal was also ordered to pay a fine of 55,000 rupees ($668; £533) - if he failed to pay up, he would have to spend an additional 13 months in jail.

Excuse me? He's 90-years-old, sentenced to life imprisonment. And if he doesn't pay the fine, he'll have to spend another year in jail? How on earth do they propose to accomplish that, resurrect him? (confused)

The arm of Indian law may not be swift, but at least it's thorough.
