Everyday thoughts, but not every day

Will the real Slim Shady please grow up?

It's a time-honoured tradition in US politics, whereby Republican campaigners use popular music to show that they're down wit' da kidz, and musicians order them to not use their performance for political gain. It's petty, but a recording is a recording, and recordings are covered by copyright restrictions on public performance, so fair enough.

But Eminem showed an above-average fragility after Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy rapped one of his…things;* not replaying the pasty-faced rapper's actual performance, but performing the thing himself. Eminem requested he cease and disist. (snowflake)

I'm no copyright lawyer, but I guess a published work is as much covered by copyright law as a performance of said work. Nevertheless, it seems unduly precious to prevent others from performing their own rendition, as long as it's not a recording for commercial purposes in competition with the original. Otherwise, where does one draw the line? Mind you, if it sees the death of karaoke, it could be for the betterment of society as a whole.

Personally I think Eminem's a cunt; his professional name reminds me of enema; and his features remind me of Mark Zuckerberg. But ne'ermind.

Eminem Mark Zuckerberg
All plain-looking, cropped-haired, white guys look the same to me: Zuckerberg and Eminem, or Eminem and Zuckerberg? Who knows? (shrug)

* I refuse to elevate Eminem's grift to the level of song.
