Most of it's boring

I have a dream...

…that one day I'll be LinkedOut.

While I don't actively engage in social media, I do have an account with LinkedIn. Although I'd rather not.

Anyhow, I received an email from LinkedIn, advising me of improvements to their mapping data. Whatever the hell that means.

We’re continuously making changes to our platform to provide you with a better experience. In an effort to improve our mapping data, over the next month we’ll be updating the location displayed on your profile based on the information you’ve already provided us — either when you set up your account or last edited your location. Your current location is displayed as Basel, Canton of Basel-Stadt, Switzerland and will be automatically updated to Basel, Basel-Town, Switzerland on October 12, 2020. If you’d like to choose a different location to be displayed on your profile, simply click here to manually update your location. If you are fine with this change, you don't need to do anything. For step-by-step instructions on how to change your location, please refer to this page. Regards, The LinkedIn Team

My given location is fine as it is—unless the Kantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft have done something to alter that without my knowing—so it doesn't need to be changed; but that's not one of the new options to choose from. Actually, neither is the one suggested in that messsage! (rolleyes)

In German, Stadt means town or city. But Basel-Stadt is also a canton, and a proper name. All that LinkedIn have done is Anglicise it, unnecessarily and poorly.* But why? I guess that the acquisition by Micro$oft has ushered in a new level of retardedness.

Of course, it was sent from messages-noreply@linkedin.com, so this is not a matter for debate, questioning, or refusal. Just accept it as it is, even if it is a step backward. Nothing to inspire either confidence or ire, really.

It's all reminiscent of Apple continuously improving their hardware and software, by removing the parts that I like, and piling on a whole load of shit that I neither need nor want. (angry)

* Basel is a city. I'm not sure if there's a differentiator between town and city, in either the German language or Switzerland, but there is in Britain, and therefore in my head.
