Will this madness never end?

A tale of two cities

Tel Aviv has pushed Paris into joint second place, alongside Singapore, as the most expensive city in the world in which to live. Less than 300km away lies Damascus, which claims the title at the other end of the scale.

Tel Aviv is expensive due to the strength of the shekel against the dollar, inflation, and the high cost of goods. Damascus is cheap because Israel's neighbour is ravaged by war.

Overall, neither sound particularly desirable.
