The drains have backed up again

Annie Nightingale: done whistlin'

photo of Annie Nightingale on the set of The Old Grey Whistle Test

Annie Nightingale, the first woman DJ on BBC Radio 1, has passed at the age of 83. With a career spanning fifty years, she was the station's longest-serving broadcaster. Remarkably, she was working until the end, with her final show broadcast just before Christmas.

She hosted The Old Grey Whistle Test between 1978 and 1982; what was probably my favourite music programme, during what I consider to be its heyday. The choice of music was eclectic, suiting teenaged me's broad taste in genres and styles of the time, and showcased many acts who later went on to bigger things. My appreciation, however, was definitely enhanced by the attractiveness of the host. (embarrassed)

RIP, Annie. Thank you for the music. The others always paled in comparison.

I make no apology to anyone offended by me complimenting Nightingale's physical appearance. I was a teenaged lad, it was the early '80s, and back then we didn't have to concern ourselves with the frailties of oversensitive arsewipes on social media. Go outside and touch grass.
