What's that smell?

Yet more fervent curiosity

Half a year ago, Jennifer Brown was impelled by a fervent scientific curiosity. I think it might be spreading among the denizens of Manassas, VA Hyderabad, since Paul Anderson has approached me with the same affliction.

The commonality of the templates is too close to be happenstance. But whereas Journal of Neurology and Neurological Disorders is shat onto the web by Annex Publishers, Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Research comes from JScholar.

Confusingly enough, JScholar also excretes its own Journal of Neurophysiology and Neurological Disorders. It's only a matter of time…

Subject: Opportunity to Share your Innovation on Biomedical Engineering
Impelled by a fervent scientific curiosity in the field of Biomedical Engineering, we are inviting submissions for the Regular Issue in the Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Research, which we are planning to release very soon. Avail this opportunity to share your scientific excellences and be a part of our esteemed journal. You may submit your article/s through Online Submission System (click here) Looking forward to having your association with us! As I noted with Jen's message, alt="none" does not hide the tracking image, it provides alternative text should the image not be rendered. To show nothing, this attribute should be set to alt="" or removed altogether. (LOL)

<img src="http://scistudymail.biz/mm_t3/tracking.php?tc=[snip]" style="display:none;" alt="none" />

Less than a week has passed, and Paul returns on behalf of JBER. No longer impelled by a fervent scientific curiosity, the smooth-talking bastard's now much impressed by my research. Awww, shucks! (proud)

Anyhow, like Olivia Madison, he's so keen to engage with me that he's included two tracking images. One of these is hidden from view by an empty ALT attribute. The other is hidden by having the attribute set to none—which has completely the opposite of the desired effect—and with inline CSS. Both are then hidden within an undisplayed DIV element. Talk about belt-and-braces, he's clearly serious about ensuring his recipients are unaware of being monitored.

Unlike Olivia's though, these tracking images will not be activated. I viewed his message only in source mode, and I don't intend replying. Once again, I suspect that this is an unmonitored email address, so there's no fun to be had.

Paul thinks that my published work is very innovative. I would take that as a compliment, if it were true and I thought he knew what the hell he was talking about. But he clearly doesn't, because it isn't any more innovative than 99% of the work published in the mainstream academic journals. It also has no bearing on the field of biomedical engineering, but that's just par for the course with these predatory bastards.

The upload URL is http://researchexperiments.biz/paper-submission.php?journal=33, the same domain as the tracking image. Interestingly, the same journal number, but different domain, as in his message from two weeks ago. Clearly, the domains redirect to the same central one: jscholarpublishers.com. I don't know what the point of that is, but it certainly gives off skeevy vibes.

Just as an experiment in social engineering, I'm going to try that unsubscribe link. It doesn't redirect to jscholarpublishers.com, but remains at researchexperiments.biz, so I have a feeling that it only unsubscribes from this domain. I await Paul's return from another!

Subject: Biomedical Engineering - Welcoming Manuscript Submissions
Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Research aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas in the forum of research related in the field of Biomedical Engineering. We came across your article with the title "[irrelevant to the field of biomedical engineering]" and thought to be very innovative. Thus we warmly welcome you to submit your next article towards JBER. You may submit your article in the following link. You may submit your article/s through Online Submission System (click here) As the journal is not funded by any funding resources we will charge the minimum publication fee (based on the economic standards of the country which is given by World Bank) to maintain its standards online. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to work with you soon. Sincerely, Paul Anderson Journal of Biomedical Engineering and ResearchResearch To stop receiving these emails, unsubscribe

And the very next day, Paul's back. Not only that, he's coming from the same domain that I unsubscribed from yesterday, researchexperiments.biz. That's disappointing.

I was expecting him to return, but from a completely different domain, thereby demonstrating that unsubscribing only applies to the sending domain, and not others under the jscholarpublishers.com umbrella. As it turns out, it appears that unsubscribing doesn't even work for that domain.

I can't say I'm surprised. The purpose of links in these messages is to confirm an active mail account, not to benefit the recipient.
