Dumb and dumber

An evangelical Christian graphic designer has had her right not to design websites for same-sex couples upheld by the US Supreme Court. So far, so what? (question) (whatever)

Well, it's the kind of outcome that provokes predictable hip-shooting responses from the usual Hollyweird suspects on social media. And small-time actor Michael Imperioli didn't disappoint. His reaction on Instagram was to forbid bigots and homophobes from watching…any movie or TV show I’ve been in. He then betrayed himself:

Weighing in on some responses contending with his post, Imperioli reaffirmed his statement, writing that “Hate and ignorance is not a legitimate point of view” and “America is becoming dumber by the minute.”

J. Kim Murphy, ‘Sopranos’ Star Michael Imperioli ‘Forbids Bigots and Homophobes’ From Watching His Work: Supreme Court Decision ‘Allows Me to Discriminate’, Variety

America is becoming dumber by the minute. I don't doubt it. In fact, he'd already made the case himself; by prohibiting bigots and homophobes from viewing his work, without any conceivable method of imposing the ban. Gestures don't come much emptier, nor America much dumber, than that. (clown)

In a bygone age, pretenders who earned a living expressing others' thoughts and words had their own carefully filtered by the studio system. It may have made for anodyne and non-confrontational copy, even stifled their voice, but it was for good reason; pretenders are rarely deep thinkers. At least they had less chance of making themselves look stupid for clout.

Imperioli included GoodFellas among his works prohibited to bigots and homophobes. You have to look a long way down the cast list to find his name, with his blink-and-you'll-miss-it performance, though. Overreaching much? Perhaps the bigots and homophobes could just shut their eyes during his scene. (thinking)
