The drains have backed up again

The colour of Ronnie

Veronica Stanley hopes that I won't disappoint the scientific bastion that is Research in Pediatrics & Neonatology. I have every intention of doing just that, but that's beside the point.

Because she also hopes that 2 page article isn't time taken. What's that supposed to mean? That I can just pull a two page article out of a hat? Of course it takes time, time that's better spent shitting on Crimson Publishers: Wings to the Research. [snigger]

I'm not sure why Veronica felt the need to style her signature with two different colours for her name. I can only assume that, in a bygone time, when communications were printed on paper, she would've signed in pink ink and added a smiley face to dot the i.

It could've been worse, I guess: Veronica Stanley.

Dear Dr. Researcher, Hope you are doing well during this pandemic situation. We are in need of articles for successful release of Upcoming Issue. Is it possible for you to support us with your 2 page opinion/case report or mini review,we hope 2 page article isn't time taken for eminent people like you. We hope you won't disappoint us. Veronica Stanley Research in Pediatrics & Neonatology (RPN) | ISSN: 2576-9200 | Cosmos Impact Factor: 3.151 Crimson Publishers, 555 Madison Avenue, 5thfloor New York, NY 10022, USA Unsubscribe

Almost needless to say: Unsubscribe is not a link, just plain text. (rolleyes)

<p style="text-align:center"><span style="font-family:verdana,geneva,sans-serif; font-size:12px">Unsubscribe</span></p>

It's been over a year since she last appeared and, as the pandemic recedes further into history, Ronnie clearly feels less need to inject levity into her begging mails by jazzing them up with colour. I think this is quite tasteful.

All she needs from me is a two-page article, with the hope that it isn't time taken for eminent people like myself. Of course it isn't, I shall simply pluck one from 'twixt my buttocks. I keep a stash of the bloody things there, for just such eventualities. (rolleyes)

I appreciate the date/time stamp of this missive, though, it's nicely numerological:* 05.05 at 05:35:33.

The lack of personalisation suggests that Ronnie's using a less sophisticated method for spamming than some of the hoes I come across. There was no tracker either. I wonder if she has a server set to local time?

Dear Veronica Stanley, Thank you for your invitation to submit my work to your journal. Could you please advise of any charges that are envisioned? I need to obtain budgetary approval beforehand. Thank you in anticipation.

* Or possibly not, I'm not into numerology per se, but the concentration of 5s and 3s struck me.

Well, that didn't work. I guess her local server is set to UTC+0000, it's easy enough to fake localisation like this.

Ronnie's being coy about the costs. Nominal fee is bollocks, she just doesn't want me to know how much I could save by submitting a lower type of manuscript from Nigeria. But perhaps my insouciance might shock her into being a ittle more forthcoming.

Actually, the charges are on the wings to the research website, albeit tucked away out of casual sight. And she has a different understanding to me as to what a nominal fee looks like. Saps from high-income countries can expect to be fleeced by $999–$1999, depending on the type of article. Desperados from low-income nations save 40% on average; although they could save a damned sight more by submitting their work to a proper journal.

Dear Veronica Stanley, Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, “nominal fee” doesn’t fit within the budget spreadsheet. I will look elsewhere. Sincerely,

Of course I know what the dollar amount would be, but she doesn't know that I know. What I want her to admit is what she coyly referred to as a nominal fee is hardly nominal.

C'mon Ronnie, give it up!

Dear Veronica Stanley, Thank you for the offer of the waiver, but what I need for the budgetary approval is a dollar amount. I’m afraid that ‘40% waiver on nominal fee’ fits no better than ‘nominal fee’. Sincerely,

Ronnie landed me with two identical missives, she must be desperate. The first found its way directly into my junk mail folder, the second was in my inbox. It turns out that pediatrics@researchcrimson.com was already on my spammers' list; pediatrics@crimsonpublisher.org has just now joined it.

Okay, it looks as if I'm gonna have to meet her half way. The processing fees for high income countries on the WttR website range from $999 for others—presumably letters, opinions etc.—to $1999 for research. A research paper would be more than two pages, so the most expensive non-research two-page article would be the dreaded case report, ugh, at $1599. Let's go with that.

Dear Veronica Stanley, We are currently working on a case report. Kind regards,

Now the bitch is just mail-bombing me! A 50% reduction is pretty generous. But $799 just to convert to PDF and upload to web? Sheesh!
