Bitches bitch'n'

How low can you go?

Attaway General is a hospital drama starring TikTok influencers, and broadcast on YouTube. It is not very good.

Not that I've watched it, I hasten to add, I simply came across it when Charlie White (penguinz0) reviewed its quantum talentlessness. But we don't have to take his word for it; after all, at the time of that review he'd only watched one episode.

IMDb isn't a flawless aggregation site, but it does at least give some breakdown of the scores attributed by its users. Attaway General currently sports an unenviable weighted average rating of 1.0 from 1,569 users for its first twelve-episode season. To put that into perspective, 1/10 is the lowest score that can be awarded, there is no zero rating. So, 1.0 is the lowest average rating that it's possible to achieve, albeit it weighted in this case.

The danger with aggregation sites is that they can be biased, gamed even, by users who rate shows or films either atypically highly or atypically low. It's easy to spot these on IMDb though; for many titles there'll be almost evenly-matched spikes of 1s and 10s, while the remainder of votes tend to fit a sort of normal distribution between these two extremes. The shape of the curve may tend towards one or other extreme, depending on how well the title has been received overall.

So, this has got to be sobering viewing for the talent behind Attaway General:

The 10 ratings presumably come from the cast and crew behind the show, their friends, family, and the brain dead influenced. But the numbers don't lie, when 92% of voters give it a score of 5 or less, and 89% give it a 1, it's a turd.

The eagle-eyed will note that the arithmetic mean is 1.8, not 1.0. This is because IMDb applies weighted vote averages rather than raw data averages. Furthermore, When unusual voting activity is detected, an alternate weighting calculation may be applied in order to preserve the reliability of our system. In the case of data that are skewed this far, the median is also a good measure of overall satisfaction. So, that'll be a 1 then.
