Robyn Hood

publicity shot for Robyn Hood

There's a Canadian remake—or reimagining, who knows?—of the legend of Robin Hood currently on screens somewhere. Retitled Robyn Hood, it features a black LGBTQIABC+FLAPFLAPFLAP female lead, naturally, with a hip-hop band called The Hood as her/they's merrie men people, living in the Sherwood and Forest tower block estates within the fictional Canadian city of New Nottingham. I think that's close enough.

From what little I've seen, the story seems to fall into the same old, same old righteous black can-do-no-wrongs battling against evil white men trope. The dialogue and acting are like something out of The CW, while the design elements are similarly amateurish; as one IMDb reviewer put it: The props prove that some people shouldn't be allowed a glue gun. (LOL)

The trivia section on IMDb is currently limited to one none-too-flattering entry:

Robyn Hood the series has become the lowest rated show in history, hitting a 1.1/10. Also, Robyn Hood the series has hit the lowest possible score a production can achieve, since a flat 1.0/10 is not possible.

IMDb, Robyn Hood

Which can't be true, because Attaway General still has a rating of 1.0/10 from 2700 votes; and while it currently enjoys a lofty 1.7/10 from 15,000 votes, Santa Inc. debuted to a rating of 1.1, beating Robyn Hood to the punch by almost two years. Besides, skewed ratings for controversial productions should be taken with a pinch of salt, especially when not accompanied by a review; how many are genuine, and how many are simply drive-by shootings from h8rz?

Despite it all, some effort has been made to offer a new treatment of the legend, kinda,* and to ground it in a reality that contextualises the changes; a level of creativity beyond Disney's abilities. So kudos for that at least. But have they checked all the DEI boxes?

At first I was disgusted by the ableism as there were no wheel chair bound persons of colour to be found! But then the police shot Robyn's mom resulting in her being paralyzed, thus creating the wheel chair bound persons of colour this show desperately needed within the story! Truly, Director X is a genius beyond compare!

Yeah but see that means the actress stole that role from someone who truly is in a wheelchair.

@endorbr Exactly. They should have had a wheelchair bound person perform the role, and used wirework for the "walking scenes" before the shooting.

Unfortunately, the king of wirework, Gerry Anderson, died over a decade ago. I do think, however, the acting in Stingray; Thunderbirds; Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons; Joe 90; and even Fireball XL5 was less wooden than what little I've seen of Robyn Hood. The dialogue was better too!

* Robin Hood didn't steal from the rich per se, but from an unjust and corrupt government. But that doesn't exist in Canada, under Prime Minister Justin Mini-pet Trudeau, so they have to go with what they've got.

IMDb ratings for Robyn Hood, 1.0/10As if to further prove its IMDb trivia section wrong, Robyn Hood joins Attaway General in the 1.0/10 club. So it is possible. Splendid!
