Les e-sports
Académie française, the custodian of the French language, has advised government officials to use French equivalents in place of English terms, when referring to video gaming. It's good to know that someone's on top of this shit. (thumbup)
The Académie Française [sic] says "jeu video de competition" should replace "e-sports", and "streamer" should become "joueur-animateur en direct".
I have no idea whether this is the exact wording from the academy, or an interpretation by Tante Beeb. But I'd hazard a guess that e-sports
, plural, would be better translated as les sports électroniques, or perhaps les jeux video de competition.
France's culture ministry told the AFP news agency that Anglicisms were "a barrier to understanding".
Because longer translations of short 'n' snappy, globally-accepted terms aren't a barrier to understanding? Let's face it, youth who're accustomed to the idioms aren't going to change their habits, while older people are unlikely to be interested in the subject in the first place. Which, I suppose, is why the academy has aimed its ruling at government officials. After all, they have no choice.
I'm willing to bet, though, that Académie française serves its distinguished members top nosh un déjeuner très agréable for their worthwhile efforts. (yummy)
