And it's come to this

Nurse! The screens!

definition of 'nurse'A dictionary definition of a word is usually accompanied by examples of it in use. One of the words in today's Waffle game is nurse, something that's easy enough to define and to put into context. Or so you'd think.

If you wanted to show a use of that particular word, could you come up with nothing better than The nurse was particularly alarmed by the colour of it? The colour of what? (thinking)

Perhaps I'm showing my age. Perhaps it's my puerile sense of humour. But the first thing it put me in mind of was those bloody awful Carry On hospital capers. Phnaar phnaar! (embarrassed)

The word litany springs to mind: Carry On Nurse (1959); Carry On Doctor (1967); Carry On Again Doctor (1969); Carry On Matron (1972). Oo-er indeed.

definition of 'beady' Not really worthy of a post of its own, but the thought that the best thing that came to mind was a puffed cheese biscuit amused me.

Then again, that's Wiktionary for you I guess. (shrug)

definition of 'sniff' Waffle may obtain its definitions from Wiktionary, but I'm not so sure about the in-use examples. The problem is—as with any open-source, free-to-edit, hivemind database—Wiktionary changes almost capriciously. So it's difficult to know what was valid at any time without sleuthing. And, even then, it may be a fruitless task. So I'm not even going to bother.

But this in-use example amused me: Give it a good sniff Barry; if your face turns green we'll put it back in the fridge. Sounds like student accommodation to me.
