Saddened and shocked of Sidmouth
As news that a lone gunman has been arrested for a mass-shooting on the New York subway, Sidmouth in Devon has also entered the world of senseless violence. The town was reeling from the stabbing of a man on Monday, although the town council's chairman tried to put a brave face on it.
He said: “Anything like this is always shocking and saddening. Unfortunately, we live in a world where these things do happen, and we’re very lucky in Sidmouth that it isn’t a frequent event – but when it does happen it’s even more shocking."

And, while he stopped short of empty promises to clamp down on violent crime, he wasn't alone in his disbelief.
One neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said ‘you don’t expect this in Sidmouth’.

Which begs the question as to what they do expect in Sidmouth. Not very much, probably. Even the WuFlu looked elsewhere for excitement.
At least it still has the beach though. Which is more than can be said for NYC.
