Will this madness never end?

The power of five

articles from BBC home page

A series of articles on the BBC's home page extolling the power of the number five caught my eye, leading me to this story about British pupils still using the pandemic to avoid school in favour of esports training.

Pupils count as persistently absent if they miss 10% or more of their school days, which is roughly one or more days every fortnight over the school year.

Andre Rhoden-Paul, BBC News

Andre's thoughtfully converted 10% to one in ten, for BBC News' less mathematically-inclined readers. FFS, I knew education standards were slipping, I just hadn't realised how badly! (SMH)

For any BBC readers confused by this, a fortnight is two weeks, or fourteen days. Schooldays are Monday through to Friday, each week, two of which amount to ten days. Thus, one schoolday every fortnight equates to 1:10, or 10%. Please do not operate heavy machinery. Your welfare cheque is in the post.
