Most of it's boring

Worst song ever?

Rob Tannenbaum, writing for GQ, has declared Starship's We Built This City to be the worst song of all time. I'm not sure what objective criteria he used to arrive at this conclusion, but hey ho.

Blender magazine first recognised the song's sheer bloody awfulness, using somewhat arbitrary criteria, in 2004. Its editor, Craig Marks, labelled the song a real reflection of what practically killed rock music in the '80s. Rolling Stone followed the compliment in 2011, with a slightly less arbitrary reader poll, and a record-setting winning—or is that losing?—margin.

Personally, I never liked the song, and it definitely exemplifies the worst of the '80s. But is it the worst ever? That depends on whether it's playing at the time or not, I guess.

Anyhow, I'm not sure what musical genre it belongs to. Do driving guitars and twee synth stabs really embody rock music, or just creative apathy? (thinking)
