BBC Culture: “Suzume, Polite Society, John Wick: Twelve of the best films of 2023 so far”Those redoubtable bookworms Rebecca Laurence and Lindsay Baker seem to have been given a dose of some sort of pest control agent. Instead, BBC Culture treats us to film buffs Nicholas Barber and Caryn James extolling the virtues of twelve films released so far this year. Hedging their bets over their literary rivals, Barber and James only claim their choices to be of the best, not the best.

The other difference with the pseudo bookworms is that the film buffs appear to be the realio dealio. They've actually watched and critiqued at least some of these entries themselves.

For the record, the twelve beauty contestants in this round are:

  1. Saint Omer;
  2. Close;
  3. John Wick: Chapter 4;
  4. Holy Spider;
  5. The Worst Ones;
  6. EO;
  7. Return to Seoul;
  8. Infinity Pool;
  9. Polite Society;
  10. How to Blow Up a Pipeline;
  11. Showing Up; and
  12. Suzume

I can honestly say, the only one of these that I have any interest in is John Wick: Chapter 4.
