Fighter talk

YouTube channel Military TV posted a completely pointless and contentious list, of The 10 Deadliest Planes of WWII. They confuse things somewhat, by adding WW 2 Fighter Planes to the end of the video's title, but we'll come back to that later.

This is a US-based channel so, needless to say, half of the selection are American planes. The remainder comprise two German, one British, and two Japanese. The latter earned positions #3 and #2 on the list largely, it seems, for their role in the attack on Pearl Harbour and bringing America into the war. So, that's a perfectly objective assessment, then. (rolleyes)

According to Military TV, the #1 deadliest plane of WWII was the B-29 Superfortress. I have no more reason to dispute their claim than they have justification to substantiate it, other than that it was two B-29s that dropped the A-bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Most best-of lists are subjective, and therefore open to question. One commentator noted that this one omitted the Avro Lancaster; Hawker Hurricane; de Havilland Mosquito; Focke-Wulf Fw 190; and Heinkel He 111. Brain of, presumably, America chimed in with:

3 of those are Bombers

And the B-29 was a ground-attack fighter renowned for its speed and manoeuvrability at low altitude, was it? (rolleyes)

Our intrepid correspondent further overlooks the fact that the Nakajima B5N, at #3, was a torpedo bomber; while the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, at #10, was a dive bomber. Neither were fighter planes. There were, however, fighter and strike versions of the Mosquito.

I guess that TooTall Tim isn't too great at joined-up thinking. Other commentators are more insightful, though, and point out the misinformation given in Military TV's worthless garbage.

Should have titled this "Some planes Americans have heard of" because it is hardly a list of the deadliest planes of WW2 and it also contains a lot misinformation.

Military TV joins the ranks of misinformative, lazily-subjective, we-couldn't-think-of-anything-better listicle channels, alongside TopTenz; Watch Mojo; What Culture, and countless others.

And the narrator needs to cut back on his 60-a-day habit. (pipe)
