All's not what it seems

It's all geek to me

Some mathematics geeks get excited about this equation:

eπi = -1

It's called Euler's identity, and it's rather beautiful in its simplicity. I can't pretend to understand how or why it works, or what it means though. I didn't even understand the supposedly simplified explanation.

I know what the symbols represent; e and π are irrational numbers, and i is the square root of -1—which doesn't really exist, except in mathematicians' imaginations. But that's about it.

Still, it's nice for them that it all comes together somehow. Pretty, but pointless.
